Fathers Influence Our Lives. How did Your Father Influence Yours? Healing Father Wounds

“My dear little Janie, I’ll never see you again.” These words were spoken by my 37-year-old father to me when I was 14 months old. He was on his way to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota to get treatment for his heart condition. Sadly, he died a week later. He left my mother with five children, no job, and no insurance. He was uninsurable because he had had rheumatic fever when he was a child which left him with an enlarged heart.

In my early adulthood when I was in my own psychotherapy, I thought my frustrations and patterns were all about my mother because she was the only parent who was there. After quite awhile, my therapist helped me see that many of my issues had to do with not having a father. With this awakening, many aspects of my life changed for the positive.Where Were You When I Needed You, Dad? Book Cover
Eventually I wanted to share what I had experienced and learned about how fathers impact children. I wrote a book, “Where Were You When I Needed You, Dad? A Guide for Healing Father Wound” The audience for the book is men and women who father’s were absent, abusive, judgmental, or emotionally distant.

A father’s influence…

Do you have difficulties in your relationship with your father? Did your dad model or influence some of the negative patterns that you are playing out in your life? Do you have feelings toward him that are interfering with your happiness? Are you a father who wants to do a better job of fathering? Are you a father who needs to own up to some of the mistakes you made so you can have a better relationship with a child of yours. If so, dealing with these issues in therapy could be a turning point that improves that quality of your life, your work, and your relationships.
